2. Why would you use the derivative plots for determining the equivalence point rather than the normal titration plot? Discuss.

Answer #1

In a titration the datas that are collected can be used in order to determine the equivalence point more precisely by monitoring the graphs and derivative plots by plotting the change in pH vs the amount of titrant added . The equivalence point of a titration is the point at which the curvature changes form positive to negative (the inflection point). It indicates the complete chemical inversion of the analyte by the titrant. Also implicates the exact amount of titrant added used in titration for change in pH.

An indicator is udeful in determining the equivalence point of a reaction if 1) the color change occurs on the vertical portion of the titration curve, and 2) the color change is sharp i.e, occurs over a small volume of added titrant (NaOH). On the basis of the pH/color changes observed, would you be able to carry out an acetic acid-NaOH titration by using an bromocresol green indicator and why?
