In a micro-extraction with ethyl acetate, and an aqueous layer containing benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone, which layer will be on top? Why? Which layer will have the crude product? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

For top layer --> the least dense

since it is lightlier than the other one (according to fluid mechanics)

The density of ethyl acetate is 0.897 g/mL whereas benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone density is 1.161 g/mL.

Eth.AC < BenM,Ketone

Ethyl acetatewill be uper layer because of lower density.

The product will go to that containing the most nonpolar and most densse, which is that of benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone.

Therefore, benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone would contain crude product.

The level of ethyl acetate (from which colchicines is precipitated from) is determined in colchicine by headspace gas chromatography. A 10 mL aqueous solution containing 0.1361g of the sample of colchicine was prepared. The USP allowed limit of ethyl acetate in colchicines is 8% by weight. An aqueous standard containing 0.1078 mg/10mL of ethyl acetate was also prepared. Both solutions also had n-propyl alcohol added in equal proportions representing the internal standard. Each chromatogram had two peaks, one from ethyl...

I recently did an experiment where I mixed 2.11 ml of water, 2.01 ml of ethyl acetate and 0.059 g of vanillyn alcohol. When I did the theoretical mass calculation I got 0.0335g, but when I did the experiment and evaporated off the organic layer, I got 0.044g of product. Could someone please explain why I would have gotten more than what my theoretical mass would be? Could this have occurred from evaporating it too long or maybe during extraction,...
