Mg(OH)2 is a sparingly soluble salt with a solubility product, Ksp, of 5.61×10−11. It is used to control the pH and provide nutrients in the biological (microbial) treatment of municipal wastewater streams. What is the ratio of solubility of Mg(OH)2 dissolved in pure H2O to Mg(OH)2 dissolved in a 0.180 M NaOH solution? Express your answer numerically as the ratio of molar solubility in H2O to the molar solubility in NaOH.

What is the pH change of a 0.200 M solution of citric acid (pKa=4.77) if citrate is added to a concentration of 0.125 M with no change in volume?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ksp ofMg(OH)2 = 4S^3

solubility in water = S =3 sqrt ksp/4

               = 3 sqrt (5.61*10^(-11)/4)   = 1.12*10^-5 M

solubility in NaOH

0.18*(2S)^2 = 5.61*10^(-11)

S = solubility in NaOH = 8.827*10^-6 M

ratio =  1.12*10^-5 /(8.827*10^-6) = 1.27

pH of citricacid = 1/2(4.77-log0.2)

           = 2.73

pH = 4.77+log(0.125/0.2) = 4.56

pH cahnge = 4.56-2.73 = 1.83

The solubility of a slightly soluble compound can be greatly affected by the addition of a soluble compound with a common ion, that is, with one of the ions in the added soluble compound being identical to one of the ions of the slightly soluble compound. The general result of the addition of the common ion is to greatly reduce the solubility of the slightly soluble compound. In other words, the addition of the common ion results in a shift...
