a power plant gas emission contains 17.4% carbon dioxide by volume. Measurements in the discharge stack indicate a temp of 83.5 °C and pressure of 1 atm.
A) what is the CO2 concentration in unit of ppmv?
B) what is the partial pressure of CO2 In atm?
C) what is the CO2 Concentration in g/m^3?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

volume of CO2 --> assume 1 Liter volum eso 0.174*1 = 0.174 Liters,. 174 mL of CO2

ppm by volume = mL/L = (174 ) / 1 = 174 ppm v

b)

Partial pressure of CO2 in atm

P total = 1 atm

P-CO2 = % CO2 * Ptotal = 0.174*1 = 0.174 atm of CO2

c)

CO2 in g/M3

assume a basif of 1 m3

so

17.4 --> 0.174 m3 of CO2

change to mol

PV = nRT

n = PV/(RT) = (1)(0.174 *10^3)/(0.082*(83.5+273))

n = 5.952 mol of CO2

mass = mol*MW = 5.952*44

mass = 261.888 g of CO2

CO2 = 261.888 g / 1m3 = 261.888 g/m3

Carbon dioxide, which is recognized as the major contributor to global warming as a "greenhouse gas," is formed when fossil fuels are combusted, as in electrical power plants fueled by coal, oil, or natural gas. One potential way to reduce the amount of CO2 added to the atmosphere is to store it as a compressed gas in underground formations. Consider a 1000-megawatt coal-fired power plant that produces about 7×106 tons of CO2 per year. 1. Assuming ideal gas behavior, 1.00...
