Estimate the the lifetime of a state that gives rise to a line of a width (a) 0.2 cm−1 and (b) 2.0 cm−1.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) lifetime of a state = h/2.pi.dE

with,

dE = hc.l

l = line width

h = planck's constant

c = 3.0 x 10^10 cm/s

For, l = 0.2 cm-1

we get,

lifetime of a state = 6.626 x 10^-34/(2 x 3.14 x 6.626 x 10^-34 x 3 x 10^10 x 0.2)

                            = 2.65 x 10^-11 s

(b) Similarly, when l = 2.0 cm-1

lifetime of a state = 6.626 x 10^-34/(2 x 3.14 x 6.626 x 10^-34 x 3 x 10^10 x 2.0)

                            = 2.65 x 10^-12 s

The Width of Spectral Lines: The average time after excitation at which a group of atoms radiate is called the lifetime, t, of an excited state. Due to Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the excited state energy has a corresponding uncertainty of DE, which is responsible for the width of spectral lines known as natural linewidth (natural broadening). If t = 1.0´10-8 s, calculate the energy uncertainty of the excited sate. Compute the natural linewidth Df of light due to transition from...

An interval estimate for the average distance car tyres lasted during their "lifetime" was reported to be 32468 km to 37224 km. This interval estimate was based on a sample of 48 tyres. The variance of the lifetime was determined from previous studies to be 44582179 km squared. What level of confidence can be attributed to this interval estimate? State your answer as a percentage, correct to the nearest whole number.
