3. An industry emits SO2 at 24 h concentrations of 10, 60, 48, 57 and 11 ppm for five consecutive days of a given month, respectively. On what days is the standard of 140mg/m3 exceeded?
Assuming a temperature of 25 deg.c and 1 atm ( Which does not seem to be correct because at this temperature SO2 gets condensed because of the dew point)
concentration ( mg/m3)= Concentration (ppm)* molar mass of SO2/ molar volume measured at 1 atm an 25 deg.c which is 24.45 L)
for 10 ppm =10*96/24.45=39.26 mg/m3
60 ppm= 60*96/24.45=235.5828 mg/m3 ( > 140 mg/m3)
48 ppm= 48*96/24.45=188 mg/m3 (> 140 mg/m3)
57 ppm= 57*96/24.45 = 223.8 mg/m3 (>140 mg/m3)
11 ppm = 11*96/24.45=43.19 mg/m3
2nd,3rd and 4th days, it has exceeded 140 mg/m3.
