Question

why is it more efficient to store energy as lipid rather that as glycogen?

why is it more efficient to store energy as lipid rather that as glycogen?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are mainly 2 reasons

1) we know that

the energy yield per gram of lipid is 38 kJ/g

and

energy yield per gram of glycogen is 17 kJ/g

we can see that

energy in case of lipid is twice the energy in case of glycogen

2)

we know that

lipid is stored as anhydrous lipid droplets

but

glycogen is stored in hydrated form

and

because of this hydration , the effective weight of glycogen is tripled

so

This increase in effective weight reduces the energy yield to about 6 kJ/g

So

it is more efficient to store energy as lipid rather that as glycogen

Triacylglycerols contain more metabolic energy gram per gram than glycogen because triacylglycerols * A contain more heteroatoms like nitrogen which facilitates amino acid synthesis B triacylglycerols are synthesized in the body, while glycogen is consumed C contain more water by volume, providing an aqueous environment for metabolic processes to occur D are more reduced, and thus can reap the maximum energy upon complete oxidation

Solar heating of a house is much more efficient if there is a way to store the thermal energy collected during the day to warm the house at night. Suppose one solar-heated home utilizes a concrete slab of area 14 m2and 26 cm thick. Part A If the density of concrete is 2400 kg/m3, what is the mass of the slab? The slab is exposed to sunlight and absorbs energy at a rate of 1.5 ×107J/h for 10 h. If...
