what would have been the result if the column was run with the acetone as the only eluting solvent? thoroughly explain your answer.

Answer #1

Acetone is both a polar and non-polar substance which makes it ideal as a solvent in chromatography compared to something like water, which is a polar substance and is not able to dissolve non polar substances. But in a chromatographic separation ideally affinities of compounds for the mobile and stationary phases are different and so we can be eluted with different retention times. Therefore acetone as mobile phase lead elution of all compounds retained on the column at same time.

You run a reaction with column chromatography and you find that you have multiple products (cyclohexene from cyclohexanol). You predictyou have the alcohol functionality you were trying to make and the alkene from the eliminated product (some of the alochol must have elimited to form the alkene). Which solvent system is more polar 30% Acetone/70% Hexane OR Ethanol? How would you be able to tell this from a column chromatography? I am just confused about this. I think that it would be Ethanol. But I am unsure how to tell that from the column chromatography because wouldn't the more polar solvent take the beta carotene with it instead of the chlorophyll?

Separation of Acetone and Ethanol A distillation column with a total condenser and partial reboiler is separating acetone and ethanol (equilibrium data is provided in the table below). The feed is 70 mole% acetone, flows at 1000 mol/h, and is a superheated vapor for which one mole of liquid must be vaporized on the feed plate to cool four moles of feed. We desire a bottoms composition of 5 mole% acetone and a distillate composition of 90 mole% acetone. The...
