Why is the washing method used in organic chemistry?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

washing method is generally in order to remove the some impurities which can soluble in water from the desired product

let me explain wit example

suppose if you have done any reaction in DMF solvent and you have finished you work up with diethyl ether

now you have you organic compound in diethyl ether layer in this layer along with the organic compound some amount of DMF also will be there

if you wash this ether layer with excess amount of water aroun two to three times you all DMF will go in to water

because DMF can soluble in water but it can soluble in organic solvent also

similarly DMSO solvent also DMSO solvent also
