Which is the most reactive nucleophile in acetone?

F-

Cl-

Br-

I-

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Acetone is non polar solvent.

Acid stregth of halo acids increases in the order.

(weakest acid) HF < HCl < HBr < HI (strongest acid)

Basicity of corresponding conugate based is,

Strongest F- > Cl- > Br- > I- (Weakest)

Stongest base caanot act as good nucleophilicity. Basicity hampers nucleophilicity.

Iodide ion I- is weakest base as it is a conjugate base of strongest haloacid Hydroiodic acid HI.

Iodide ion I- hence will be a strongest nucleophile in acetone.

Answer option : I-.

Which is the better nucleophile in no solvent, in an aprotic solvent, and a protic solvent? Cl- or Br- I was under the impression that Cl- was the better nucleophile because it is smaller and can not stabilize the charge as well as Br- thus making it a better nucleophile when in no solvent/ aprotic solvent I also thought that because the charge is more concentrated in Cl- it was more suscelptible to being protonated in a protic solvent, thus...
