How do I separate benzoin and 1,4-dibromobenzene and then purify and solidify benzoin?
Both benzoin and 1,4-dibromobenzene are soluble in DCM (DiChloroMethane) solvent. Add anhydrous sodium sulfate to remove any traces of water present in your reaction mixture in the lab. Now benzoin only crystallizes out, 1,4-dibromobenzene remains in the solvent. In order to obtain some quite pure benzoin a small sample of the crude product is recrystallised from a little alcohol. Melting point 134°.Further confirm with the help of IR & NMR spectra
