100 kg of a solution of KNO3 in water that is 70/30 by mass is cooled from 95oC to 30oC in a crystallizer. There are two streams from the crystallizer: one stream containing a saturated solution that is discarded as waste, and another product stream that contains both a filter cake of pure KNO3 and saturated solution. The mass ratio of filter cake to saturated solution in the second stream is 90:10. This product stream is then sent to an evaporator where the water is removed to obtain pure KNO3. If the solubility limit of KNO3 at 30oC is 47g KNO3 per 100g water, what is the mass of KNO3 recovered by this method?

The figure shows a flowchart for the production of potassium nitrate. The fresh feed consists of 850 kg per hour of a 20% potassium nitrate solution which is concentrated in an evaporator. Before entering the evaporator the fresh feed is mixed with a regulated stream of a saturated solution at 40 degrees Celsius from a filter. The saturated solution of this salt at 40 degrees Celsius has a composition of 0.6 kg of salt per kilo of water. From the...

A drug (D) is produced in a three-stage extraction from the leaves of a tropical plant. About 1000kg of leaf is required to produce 1kg of the drug. The extraction solvent (S) is a mixture containing 16.5wt% ethanol (E) and the balance water (W). The following process is carried out to extract the drug and recover the solvent. 1. A mixing tank is charged with 3300kg of S and 620kg of leaf. The mixer contents are stirred for several hours,...
