1. If H2SO4 has a concentration of 0.01 M, what is the pOH of H2SO4? 2. What is the difference between the strength and the concentration of any acid or base?
1)
[H2SO4 ] = 0.1 M
pOH = H2SO4?
assume complete dissociation of H2SO4 = 2H+ and SO4-2
then
[H+] = 2*[H2SO4] = 2*0.01 = 0.02 M
then
pH = -log(H+) = -log(0.02) =1.6989
pOH = 14- pH = 14-1.6989 = 12.3011
2)
What is the difference between the strength and the concentration of any acid or base?
strength of an acid/base does NOT depends on how concnetrated it is or nor.. i.e. HF is weak acid, and HCl is a strong acid, independent on how much we have of it. NH3 is weak and NaOH is strong
a strong acid/base will dissociate 100% or almost completely
a weak acid/bas will not dissociate 100% or compeltely, only partially
a CONCENTRATED acid/base, means it is high content in mol per unit volume, even though it will follow dissociation rules if it is weak/acid
then, you may have pretty concnetrated weak acids, and they will not dissociate 100%
