Explain why there is no reaction when chromic acid is added to 3 degree alochol.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans:

  • Chromic acid (H2CrO4) is a strong oxidizing agnt , used to oxidize many classes of organic compouds, the most common of which is alcohols.
  • Any alcohols containing atleast one alpha hydrogen is oxidized by chromic acid
  • For example when chromic acid reacts with primary alcohol results in formation of carboxilic acid
  • When chromic acid reacts with secondary alcohol results in formation of ketone.
  • As there is no Alpha hydrogens in 3degree alcohol or tertiary alcohol chromic acid can not perform oxidation reaction with it.
