In my chemistry lab we synthesized a componund [Cu(NH3)4]SO4*H2O

We used a vacuum filter-and rinsed it with acetone in the end. My post lab is asking:

1. give two reasons why we used acetone instead of water and i know one is because the water would dissolve the hydrate compound. What would be another reason?

2. predict whether each of these would result in higher, lower or unaltered percent yield of product. please explain

a. the product as washed in waterf instead of acetone

b. more than 10 mL of water was used to dissolve the anydrous coppeter (II) sulfate.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Some organic compound or solvents left in the final compound will wash away with acetone, and the compound will dry faster.

2.

a. Cu(NH3)4]SO4*H2O has a solubility in water of 18.5 g/100 g. So, if washed with water, some of the compound will dissolve with water and wash away. Hence you will obtain less yield.

b. The concentration of the reaction mixture will decrease. Even there will be more probability of forming more and more of CuSO4·5H2O. Hence %yield of the product will decerease.

I have provided the information for the lab below. I want to see the chemical reactions that take place during each step of the experiment. So in the procedures when a chemical was added i would like to see what the products and byproducts that were formed. I also want to see one over all reaction for this experiment to just get an overview of what exactly is happening during the experiment. Thank you:) Part B: Synthesis of [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 Objective:...
