For each of the following atoms or ions determine # protons, # electrons and #neutrons:

119Sn4+ # of protons___ # electrons____ #neutrons_____

201Hg # of protons____ # electrons ____ #neutrons_____

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. 119Sn4+

Mass no = 119

Mass no is the sum of no.of electrons + no. of neutrons

Now, atomic no of Sn = 50

Since, atomic no. = no. of protons =50

So, no. of neutrons = Mass no. - Atomic no. = 119-50 = 69

No. Of neutrons = 69

No.of electrons = no. of protons in a neutral atom

So, no. of electrons = 50-4(since +4 means lost 4 electrons)

= 46

2. 201Hg

Mass no = 201

Atomic no = 80

So, no of protons = no of electrons = 80

no. of neutrons = Mass no-Atomic no. = 201-80 = 121

The nucleus of an atom consists of protons and neutrons (no electrons). A nucleus of a carbon‑12 isotope contains six protons and six neutrons, while a nitrogen‑14 nucleus comprises seven protons and seven neutrons. A graduate student performs a nuclear physics experiment in which she bombards nitrogen‑14 nuclei with very high speed carbon‑12 nuclei emerging from a particle accelerator. As a result of each such collision, the two nuclei disintegrate completely, and a mix of different particles are emitted, including...

Which experiments prove atomic theory? Sub-atomic theories: atoms have: nuclei; electrons; protons; and neutrons. That the number of electrons atoms have determines their relationship with other atoms. That the atom is the smallest elemental unit of matter - that we can't continue to divide atoms into anything smaller and have them retain the characteristics of the parent element. That everything is made of atoms. These sub-theories might spur more thoughts of individual experiments that prove individual sub-atomic theories (my guess...
