in an emulsion polymerization, all the ingredients are charged at time t=0. The time to convert various amounts of monomer to polymer is indicated in the following table. Predict the time for 30% conversion. Polymerization is nomal.(no water solubility or polymer percipitation)

Fraction of original charge of monomer converted to polymer                   time(hr)

                                        0.05                                                                      2.2

                                        0.12                                                                      4.0

                                        0.155                                                                    4.9

Answer #1

charging time of ingredients=t=0 is the starting time of reaction/charging,

the chart shows ,

0.05 =2.2 hrs for 100% conversion,

0.12 =4.0 hrs for 100% conversion,

0.155 =4.9 hrs for 100 % conversion,

now we will calculate the times for 30% conversion,

1) 0.05*30=1.5/100=0.015 ,

if 0.05 =2.2 hrs. then for

0.015=?, by cross multiplying we can get the time require for 30%,

0.015*2.2=0.033/0.05=0.66 hrs,

2) if 0.12= 4.0 for 100%,

0.12*30=3.6/100=0.036 (30%),

0.12 = 4 hrs,

0.036=?, ,

0.036*40.144/0.12=1.2 hrs,

3) if 0.155 =4.9 hrs for 100%, then for 30%= ?,

0.155*30=4.65/100=0.0465,

0.155=4.9 hrs then,

for 0.0465=?,

0.0465*4.9=0.2278/0.155=1.47 hrs
