Toluene's boiling point is range from 100 to 116 C. and my unknow boiling range is 101 to 107 C

How do you tell if it's pure or not by determination of temperature range, and continuous drop rate?

Answer #1

Ans. As the boiling point of Toluene is 110 degree celsius. and the boiling point range of unknown is coming at the range of 101 to 107 degree celsius.

There are two possibilities

compound cannot be toluene as toluene boiling point is 110 degree celsius and also in the presence of impurities its boiling point should be increased not decreased.

Compound may be toluene but the thermometer is not calibrated and can show an error of 5 to 10 degree celsius. So. it is recommended to first calibrated the thermometer.

Hi, organic chemistry folks! Can someone edit my short paragraph about my experiment on simple distillation of an unknown organic liquid. It needs to be concise, clear, intepreted, and contain relevant values. Hopefully, I did those but I'm just having trouble wording it all together. Thanks! The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to purify and identify a volatile organic liquid of unknown #3 by performing a simple distillation technique. The purified unknown #3 was characterized via BP and IR....

150 grams of boiling water (temperature 100°C, heat capacity 4.2 J/gram/K) are poured into an aluminum pan whose mass is 970 grams and initial temperature 25°C (the heat capacity of aluminum is 0.9 J/gram/K). (a) After a short time, what is the temperature of the water? (b) What simplifying assumptions did you have to make? The thermal energy of the aluminum doesn't change. Energy transfer between the system (water plus pan) and the surroundings was negligible during this time. The...

The boiling point of liquid nitrogen at 1 atm pressure (NBP) is -195.8°C. Liquid nitrogen stored in an insulated vessel at 1 atm (abs) evaporates and the nitrogen vapour is compressed to 50 atm (abs) and heated to a temperature of 70°C at the rate of 5.5 kg/min. A drop of water with a mass of 0.48 g is vaporized at 100 ∘C and condenses on the surface of a 55-g block of aluminum that is initially at 25 ∘C. If the heat released during condensation goes only toward heating the metal, what is the final temperature in Celsius of the metal block? (The specific heat capacity of aluminum is 0.903 J/(g⋅∘C).) Express the temperature in Celsius to two significant figures. Calculate the amount of heat required to...
