How many electrons are in a singl, double, and triple bond? How does the bond order to relate to each of these types of bonds?

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • A single bond is obtained by the sharing of one electron each (as in case of H2 molecule)
  • A double bond is obtained by the sharing of two electron each (as in case of O2 molecule)
  • A triple bond is obtained by the sharing of three electron each (as in case of N2 molecule)

Bond order is inversly related to the bond length i.e- higher is the bond order shorter is the bondlength. Thus, in this context, the bond order for N2 , O2 andH2 follows the order N2 >  O2 > H2 and hence bond length have the opposite trend i.e- N2 <  O2 < H

are the following statements true or false? One sigma bond and one pi bond comprise a double bond. A triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds. End-to-end overlap results in a sigma bond. A double bond consists of two pairs of electrons. Bonds formed from atomic p orbitals are always sigma bonds. A pi bond restricts rotation about the sigma bond axis.
