The column of a gas chromatography is polar, and a mixture of a polar compound and a nonpolar compound is injected. Which of the two compounds will have the higher retention time? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Polar compond have higher retention time.

Explanation -

Column of gas chromatography is polar it is stationary phase. polar molecule intract more than non polar molecule with polar column satationary phase and take more time to elute therefore it retention time is more.

but, non polar molecule donot intract with polar column satationary phase and elute fast with gas mobile phase and take less time to elute.

because of above reson Polar compond have higher retention time.
