Physical chemistry:
What is a reversible galvanic cell? Why is the Nernst equation insufficient to determine the emf of a Daniel cell?
a) Reversible Cell: In a cell the reaction continues if the emf of the cell is positive.
A cell is said to be reversible if
(i) We apply an equal emf externally on the cell, then the cell stops working. The chemical reaction stops.
(ii) We apply emf more than the emf of cell then the reaction will get reversed.
Example: Daniel cell is reversible cell
b) The Nernst equation cannot be applied to Daniel cell when
(i) we are taking concentrated electrolytic solution. As the Nernst equation is farily applicable in dilute solution. In concentrated solution we have to consider the true activities of ions [inspite of mere concentration] . And the determination of non ideal activites is another experiment based process. So the application of Nernst equation becomes more difficult
(ii) we can apply Nernst equation only when there is no current flow in the cell.
