Organic compound with partition coefficient of 7.54. If there are initially 6.67 g of the compound dissolved in 70.0 ml of water, how many g will remain in aqueous layer after extraction with 30.0 ml of ether?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1.5762

Explanation

partiesion coefficient, Kd=[A]org/[A]aq

[A]org = Concentration of solute in organic layer

[A]aq = Concentration of solute in aquous layer

Kd = 7.54

Mass of compound in organic layer= (x /30ml)×100

Mass of compond in aquous layer = ((6.67 - x )/ 70ml )×100

((x )g/30ml)×100/((6.67 - x)g/70ml)×100= 7.54

x × 70 /(6.67 - x )× 30 = 7.54

2.333x = 7.54(6.67 - x )

2.333x = 50.2918 - 7.54x

9.873x = 50.2918

x = 5.0938g

6.67 - x = 6.67 - 5.0938 = 1.5762g

Therefore,

Mass of Compound in aquous layer = 1.5762g
