In an experiment, a student was asked to measure the desity of an unknown solid. He was given a small flask, which he found to have a mass of 32.6195 grams when empty. He added some chunks of an unknown solid to the flask, and found that the mass mass of the flask with the solid was 330.2117 grams. Leaving the solid in the flask, the student added some water at 22.3 degrees C (0.997701 g/mL) untill the flask was completely filled. The mass of the flask with solid and water was 418.1522 grams. Determine the density of the unknown solid.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mass of empty flask = 32.6195 g
Mass of empty flask + mass of solid = 330.32117 g
Mass of empty flask + mass of solid + mass of water = 418.1522 g

Mass of sold alone = 330.32117 - 32.61950 = 297.70167 g
Mass of water alone = 418.1522 - 330.32117 = 87.83103 g

Volume of water added = mass/density = 87.83103/0.997701 = 88.03342 mL
Volume of the flask = 124.5465 mL
Volume of solid = 124.5465 - 88.03342 = 36.51308 mL
Density of solid = mass/volume = 297.70167/36.51308 = 8.15329 gram/mL
