Which of the following salts will form a basic solution? Can you show me how to determine if the salt will form a basic solution.
A)   NaBr
B)   LiNO2
C)   NH4Cl
D)   NaI
E)   Al(ClO4)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

If a strong base and weak acid react with each other to form a basic salt, When this salt is dissolved it forms a basic solution.

A) NaBr = NaOH + HBr

Both the acid and base are strong so it forms a neutral salt

B) LiNO2 = LiOH + HNO2

Strong Base and weak acid react to form a basic salt. This will form a basic solution

C) NH4Cl = NH4OH + HCl

Strong acid and weak base which gives acidic salt which forms acidic solution

D) NaI = NaOH + HI

Strong acid and strong base gives neutral salt

E) Al(ClO4)3 = Al(OH)3 + 3HClO4

Weak base and Strong acid give acidic salt
