Based on chromatographic theory (how a TLC plate works) which of the four known analgesics is the most polar and which is the least polar? Explain reasoning.

Acetominiphen, Aspirin, Caffeine, Naproxen.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

From:

Acetominiphen, Aspirin, Caffeine, Naproxen

Caffeine>Acetaminophen> Naproxen > Aspirin

Caffeine

the most polar since it has 4 nitrogen atoms (rich in electrons)

Thee amide bonding (C=O NH2) makes it even more polar.

Acetaminophen

the phenic group is polar,

It also has 1 amide

Naproxen

it has no amides but has two acidic groups COOH... those are pretty polars

Aspirin

has only a COOH group (carobxilic acid) therefore, it is the least polar, yet polar!
