What are the 2 main roles of functional groups in organic compounds?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Functional groups determines,

a. Physical property of organic compound : Functional group determines the properties of a compound based on its interaction with the molecules of the same species in a system.

b. Reactivity of organic compound : A specific functional group will have same type of reactivity regardless to other part of the molecule it is connected to. This criteria is helpful in classification of groups of compounds based on functional groups present and also in determination of which compound is present in an unknown mixture.
