If you took compound A (MP = 120-121) and compound B (MP = 135-136) and made a mixture that was 60% A and 40% B, which of the following experimental ranges could not be possible. Explain your reasoning.
129.1-133.5
113.5-118.6
95.4-102.3

Answer #1

129.1 - 133.5 range is not possible.

A has melting point in the range 120-121. The mixture of A and B has more quantity of A. So the MP of the mixture will be close to that of A but cannot be greater. The presence of B (an impurity) decreases the melting point of A. This is called melting point depression.

The presence of foreign substances (impurities) disturb the crystal lattices of pure compounds thereby decreasing the intermolecular forces. Hence melting point decreases if impurities are present.
