A new candy called a pepper scotch is prepared by reacting one butterscotch with a peppermint according to the following balanced equation, 1 Bs+ 1P -> 1PS.
a. HOw many pepperscotches can be made with 50.0 g of butterscotch and 48.0 g of peppermints? Show calculations.
b. What is the limiting reactant? show calculations.
1Bs + 1P 1PS
(a) From the given equation we can say that 1 mole of butterscotch is reacting with 1 mole of peppermint to give 1 mole of product.
Therefore Bs and P are reacting in 1:1 ratio.
Here given Bs = 50g and P = 48g, we can assume that 48g of P reacted with 48g of Bs to give 48g of PS.
(b) Limiting reagent in a reaction is the substance which ran out first and limits the concentration of product. Limiting reagent is totally consumed in the reaction.
In this reaction, Amount of Bs > Amount of P.
Therefore peppermints will be consumed first. Left Bs will be the excess reagent and remains unreacted
Peppermint is the limiting reagent
