how many grams of magnesium oxide could be formed from the reaction of 0.248 g of magnesium metal?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Magnesium metal reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide.

The reaction equation is

Mg (s) + O2 (g) MgO (s)

The balanced equation is

2 Mg (s) + O2 (g) 2 MgO (s)

In the above balanced reaction equation;

2 moles of Mg produces 2 moles of MgO

1 moles of Mg produces 1 moles of MgO.

Molar mass of Mg = 24.3 g/mol

So, 24.3 g of Mg = 1 mole

1 g of Mg = (1/24.3) mole

0.248 g of Mg = (0.248/24.3) mole = 0.010206 mole

So, 0.010206 mole of MgO will produce.

Now,

Molar mass of MgO = 40.3 g/mol

So, 1 mole of Mg = 40.3 g

0.010206 mole of Mg = 0.010206 x 40.3 g = 0.411 g
