Could you effectively alter blood glucose levels (in a therapeutically useful way) if a patient was given complex carbohydrates by IV? Why or why not?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The complex carbohydrates are need to be digested properly.

The complex carbohydrates are first broken down to normal small carbohydrates in the mouth. here 30% digestion takes place.

Then only they may entre the body to be consumed. So they need extra time to get digested.

Hence we cannot give complex carbohydrates through an IV to raise the blood glucose level.

So to ensure the increase level of glucose in blood (fastest), glucose should be given throught IV, as it can be digested easily.

The glycemic index alone is insufficient to explain the effect of food consumption on blood glucose levels. We often consume carbohydrates with other nutrients (proteins and/or fats) which can alter digestion rates and glucose absorption rates. Many other factors can affect the rate of food processing and absorption—and thus blood glucose levels—as well. Consider one of the following factors and design a simple but conclusive experiment that would assess how that factor would affect blood glucose levels. • Cooking food...

When red blood cell (RBC) hemoglobin is exposed to high blood glucose levels, it becomes glycated. The hemoglobin A1c test measures the percentage of glycated red blood cells in whole blood as an indicator of blood glucose levels over the 90-day lifespan of an RBC. Hemoglobin A1c levels between 4% and 5.9% are considered normal. A1c levels are well correlated with average blood glucose levels. An A1c level of 6% (minimal for a diagnosis of diabetes) is equivalent to an...
