Propose a structure for [Fe(HEDTA)(h2o)] . H2O and Na2[Fe(EDTA)N2] . 2H2O

Propose a structure for [Fe(HEDTA)(h2o)] . H2O and Na2[Fe(EDTA)N2] . 2H2O

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Co-ordination complex Fe[(HEDTA)(H2O)].H2O.

EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra-Acetic acid) is Hexadendate ligand, (2 N and 4 O acetate groups)

Addition of H2O to the Fe(EDTA) complex replaces 1 O coordinating site with H2O and a new complex is Fe[(HEDTA)(H2O)].

[ ] is co-ordination sphere representation and groups written outside are not complexed with central metal.

The geometry of complex is distorted octahedral.

2) Co-ordination complex Fe[(EDTA)(N2)].2H2O.

Here N2 is added to an octahedral complex Fe[(EDTA)]. The new incoming ligand N2 do not replaces any original ligand but adds on to Fe and changes its geometry to Petagonal-bipyramidal. The oxidation state of Fe changes to Fe (II).
