You have diluted 2.00mL of 5.50mM iodine solution to a total volume of 8.00mL with acetone, acid and water. It has taken 3.15 minutes for all of the color to disappear. What is the rate of this reaction in units of mM/min?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer – Given, initial concentration of iodine solution = 5.50 mM

Volume = 2.00 mL , final concentration = ? , total volume = 8.00 mL ,

time = 3.15 min

So we know dilution law

M1V1 = M2V2

So, M2 = M1V1/V2

            = 5.50 mM *2.00 mL/ 8.00 mL

            = 1.375 mM

So, we know rate = - ∆[I2] / ∆t

                             = - (1.375mM -5.50 mM) / (3.15 min – 0 min)

                             = 1.31 mM/min

So, the rate of this reaction is 1.31 mM/min
