Why is suction filtration preferable to ordinary gravity filtration for separating the purified crystals from the mother liquid? Please explain your answer.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Suction filtration is a faster method of filtration which allows minimal time the crystals spend with solvent while filtering be it the mother liquor or the washing solvent. Also suction filtration may be used under inert/vacuum conditions so air contact can be avoided too. Whereas, in case of ordinary filtration technique, the solvent used for washing spends a lot of time with crystals which may end up dissolving some of the crystals back into the filtrate and end up lowering the overall yield of crystallization. Thus suction filtration is the preferred method.
