describe the relationship between moles and atoms
1 mole is defined as the amount of an atom or ion or molecule or compound that contains Avogadro's number (Na = 6.023x1023) of atom or ion or molecule or compound respectively. e.g.
12.0 g of carbon contains 6.023x1023 carbon atoms. Hence mass of 1 mole of carbon atom is 12.0 g. 12.0 g of carbon is also called atomic mass of carbon and is represented by 12.0 g/mol.
Hence mass of a single carbon atom = atomic mass / Na = (12.0 g/mol) / (6.023x1023 atoms/mol)
= 1.992x10-23 g
A single carbon atom contains 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons.
