what is the molecular formula of 2-methylpropane

What is the name given to molecules that have the same molecular formula, but different structural formulas?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

2-Methylpropane has parent chain of 3C and 1 methyl group on C2 position so the structure as we can see in diagram is this. As parent name ends with –ane it’s a saturated compound and hence for total of 4C using general formula for saturated alkane CnH2n+2 we get M.F. as C4H2x4+2 i.e. C4H10.

The only anathor possible arrangement of 4C is shown in diagram as a straight chain. The name of this structural isomer is Butane.
