A soda is put into a bucket of water and immediately sinks to the bottom of the bucket. A diet soda of the same brand is placed in the same bucket and it is observed that it floats. When a solid is immersed in a fluid the solid floats by a force equal to difference between its weight and the weight of fluid displaced.

A material sinks to the bottom if its weight is more than the weight of the fluis in which it is immersed and the reverse happens if its weight is less than the weight of the fluids.

where m = mass of the soda+ mass of the container containing the soda

So if icontainer material is different like plastic, it may float and if contaier is glass, it sinks to the bottom.
