What are the half reactions that take place in the electrolysis of molten NaCl?

The half-reaction for the species that is reduced is:

The half-reaction for the species that is oxidized is:

*Note* Also needed are the states of matter in each reaction. Thanks.

Answer #1

Balanced "molecular" equation:
2NaCl(l) 2Na(l) + Cl2(g)

Balanced net ionic equation:
2Na+ + 2Cl- Na(l) + Cl2(g)

Sodium is reduced.
Na+ + 1e- Na(l)
Here the oxidation number becomes +1 to Zero, means it is reduced.

Chlorine is oxidized.
2Cl- Cl2(g) + 2e-

Here the oxidation number becomes -1 to Zero, means it is oxidised.
