octane , one of the componets of gasoline has a density of 0.703 g/cm3 . How many pounds dose a gallon of octane weigh?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

We convert gallon to cm3 by using following conversions.

1 Gallon to L and then L to cm3.

1 Ga = 3.78541 L

1 L = 1000 mL or cm3

Volume in cm3 = 1 Ga x( 3.785412 L/ 1 Ga) x (1000 L / 1 L)

= 3785.412 cm3

Lets now find mass by using density and volume relation

Density = mass / volume

So mass = density x volume

Mass in g = (0.703 g / cm3) x 3785.412 cm3

= 2661.14 g

Conversion of mass from g to pound.

1lb = 453.592 g

Conversion :

Mass in lb = 453.592 g x 1 lb / 453.592 g = 5.9 lb = 6.0 lb

So the mass in lb = 6.0 lb

The octane rating of gasoline is a relationship of the burning efficiency of the given gasoline mixture to the burning efficiency of octane (C8H18). Like most of hydrocarbons, octane reacts with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide and water. The unbalanced equation for this reaction:                         C8H18 (l) + O2(g) → CO2 (g) + H2O (g) If 0.240 mol of octane is allowed to react with 0.890 mol of oxygen gas, how many moles of water are produced in this...
