Is there any danger in using two boiling chips instead of one? Why or why not?

Is there any danger in using two boiling chips instead of one? Why or why not?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Boiling chips are made-up of porous porcelain pieces. Those do not react with the reactants as well as solvent. They are used to let the solvent boil with steady flow of bubbles instead of bumpy boiling. If we do not use boiling chips then there is a danger of spillage of solvent due to bumpy boiling. If we use one or two boiling chips then there would not be any danger associated with that. Because one or two chips are not going to make any difference in the process of boiling, they are just to regulate flow of air bubbles and so the boiling process.

how does a vacuum reduce atmospheric pressure? boiling chips and vacuum distillation, respectively, are used in distillations to: A. provide nucleation sites that give the liquid a place to start forming bubbles to prevent super-heating; lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled. B. lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled; to work synergistically with the vacuum system to further lower the boiling points. C. lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled;...
