In an old trunk, you find a piece of metal that you think may be aluminum, silver, or lead. In lab, you find it has a mass of 192 g and a volume of 71.1 cm3 . Using the table, what is the metal you found?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given mass of the metal , m = 192 g

volume of the metal , V = 71.1 cm3

                                  = 71.1 mL                   Since 1 mL = 1 cm3

We know that density , d = mass / volume

                                     = 192 g / 71.1 mL

                                    = 2.70 g/mL

From the table the metal whose density 2.70 g/mL is aluminium.

Therefore the density of the object is 0.738 g/mL

5. You are a technical specialist for the DEA. During a raid of a drug dealer's house a silver-colored rod was found; it weighs 26.09 g. Your supervisor asks you to quickly determine (on site) the metal that was used to make the rod. Your field kit has the same equipment in it that you will use in lab. Would the equipment in your field kit be satisfactory for determining whether the rod is made of aluminum. See Table 2-2....
