Why are benzylic/allylic alcohols prone to oxidization? What characteristic allows MNO2 to oxidize them but not other alcohols? Thanks!

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The main reason for benzylic/allylic alcohols prone to oxidization is stablization of charge. benzylic/allylic carbocation, carbanion and radical will stablize the charge very well. hence benzylic/allylic alcohols are called activated alcohol.
