A student is using a program to analyze the ditigal image of a colorimetric assay. The student measures pixel intensity (gray value) of a blank sample with 217 and of a standard sample with 140. What is the absorbance equivalent value of the standard sample? State your answer using 3 significant figures

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

Here, we are going to calculate the  absorbance equivalent value of the standard sample.

Step 1:

Black sample =217 (three significant figures)

Standard sample =140 =14 x 101 (two significant figures)

The absorbance equivalent value of the standard sample =(217-140) =77

=77.0

As we know, Zeros at the end of a number are significant if it contains a decimal point.

Therefore, the  absorbance equivalent value of the standard sample 3 significant figures is 77.0

A student used standard solutions of aspirin in a FeCl3-KCl-HCl mixture to plot a graph of molarity versus absorbance for diluted aspirin solutions of known concentration. The student determined the slope of the graph to be 4,862 M-1cm-1. Next the student measured out 0.219 grams of a headache medicine tablet and dissolved it in 10.0 ml of NaOH and then added enough water to make a 100 ml solution. Five ml of this solution was then added to another 100...

A student collected the following data to determine the specific heat of a metal sample.  50.0 g of metal were transferred from boiling water into a calorimeter containing 100 g of H2O at 22.3oC.  The temperature of the water rose to 23.5oC.  Calculate the specific heat of the metal. Enter your answer with 3 significant figures. Based on the calculated specific heat, what is the most likely identity of the metal in the previous problem? SmArT Academy, an SAT test prep company, claims that their program improves student scores). A simple random sample of 37 students took the SAT before taking the prep course and then again after taking the prep course. The average increase in their scores after taking the course was 40 points with a standard deviation of 120 points. What can we conclude about the SmArT Academy’s claim that the course improves scores? Use a significance level of α = 0.05 and...

Student Debt – Vermont: The average student loan debt of a U.S. college student at the end of 4 years of college is estimated to be about $22,600. You take a random sample of 136 college students in the state of Vermont and find the mean debt is $23,500 with a standard deviation of $2,200. We want to construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean debt for all Vermont college students. (a) What is the point estimate for the...

Are most student government leaders extroverts? According to Myers-Briggs estimates, about 82% of college student government leaders are extroverts.† Suppose that a Myers-Briggs personality preference test was given to a random sample of 70 student government leaders attending a large national leadership conference and that 57 were found to be extroverts. Does this indicate that the population proportion of extroverts among college student government leaders is different (either way) from 82%? Use α = 0.01. (a) What is the level...

During fiscal year 2004, the mean monthly benefit per person participating in the federal food-stamp program in Nebraska was $79.52. Due to the poor economy, more people are using this support program to purchase eligible food. A random sample of 15 people using food stamps was obtained, the sample mean was $80.97 and the sample standard deviation was $4.50. Assume the distribution of monthly benefit per person is normal and use α=0.05. Is there any evidence the true mean monthly...

In the journal Mental Retardation, an article reported the results of a peer tutoring program to help mildly mentally retarded children learn to read. In the experiment, the mildly retarded children were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group received peer tutoring along with regular instruction, and the control group received regular instruction with no peer tutoring. There were n1 = n2 = 36 children in each group. The Gates-MacGintie Reading Test was given to both groups before instruction...
