The reason for this method of calibration is that the chemical shift depends on the operating frequency of the spectrometer. Since there are many different operating frequencies used, the values of chemical shifts in Hz would vary greatly between machines. Hence for variety of oscillating frequency and in vast range we can see them in only 0 to 12 delta values in NMR.
Multiplet is bunch of peaks in NMR. Generally more than 4 peaks we can say them a multiplet more than 3.
Towards right side of (towards 0) the NMR called as upfields.
TMS-trimethylsilane is internal standard in NMR gave peak at 0 delta for the standard to adjust other peaks.
