The pKa of aspartate is higher in a hydrophobic environment than in an aqueous environment; however, the opposite is true of lysine. Briefly explain why each pKa moves in the direction it does when moving from aqueous to hydrophobic environments. (4 pts)
Note that:
aspartate --> Aspartic acid pKa1 = 1.88 pKA2 = 9.60 pKa3 = 3.65 pI = 2.77
lysine --> lysine --> pKa1 = 2.18 pKA2= 8.95 pKA3 = 10.53 pI = 9.74
Note that aspartate is much more acidic in groups. Also, side chain has an acidic COOH group (1 amino group + 2 acidic groups) the pI will be very low for this, meaning htat this is much more acidic overall.
Lysine has a very basic amine group in the side chain, therefore 2 amino group s+ 1 acidic group. pI is pretty higher
