Prepare 1 liter of a 0.250M hypochlorite buffer solution. What volume of 1.5M NaOH must be added to get a buffer with a pH of 8? Ka value for the acid is 3.00 x 10^-8.

My answer is 41.7 mL.

Answer #1

PH     = PKa + log[salt]/[Acid]

PH = 8

PKa = -log3*10-8   = 7.5228

8 = 7.5228 + logx/0.25-x

logx/0.25-x = 8-7.5228

logx/0.25-x   = 0.4772

x/0.25-x       = 100.4772

x/0.25-x       = 3

x                 = 3(0.25-x)

x              = 0.1875 moles of NaOH

molarity of NaOH   = no of moles/volume in L

1.5                          = 0.1875/volume in L

volume in L           = 0.1875/1.5   = 0.125L   = 125ml
