You have prepared 550 mL of a 0.125 M acetate buffer solution with a pH of 4.32. A). Determine the concentration of both the acetate (conjugate base) and acetic acid (weak acid) in this solution. Show all of your calculations.

B). If you made the solution above using solid sodium acetate (MW= 136g/mol) and liquid acetic acid (17.6 M, referred to as glacial acetic acid), what mass of sodium acetate is required and what volume of glacial acetic acid is require? Show all your calculations.

Answer #1

Ka of acetic acid = 1.7*10-5

Pka= -log (1.7*10-5)=4.77

HA(acetic acid)----> H+ + A-

pH= pKa+log [A-]/[HA]

4.32= 4.77+log [A-]/ [HA]

0.45= log [A-]/[HA]

[A-]/ [HA]= 10^(0.45)= 2.818

CH3COONa (acetate buffer)----> A- + Na+

concentratino of [A-] =0.125M

[A-]/[HA]=2.818

[HA] =[A-]/2.818= 0.125/2.818= 0.044358 M

Moles of acetate = 0.125*550/1000=0.06875 moles

Mass of sodium acetate= Moles* Molecular weight= 0.06875*82=5.64 gms

Concenration of acetic acid=0.044358M this is there in 550ml. How much is ther ein 17.6M needs to be calculated

0.044358*550= 17.6*V V= volume of acetic acid

V= 0.0044358*550/17.6=1.386 ml of acetic acid
