For many years FeI3 was thought to be non existent . Suggest reason for its instability . The compound has now been prepared in non aqeous solvent . how would you prove that it is not a mixture of FeI2 and I2 ?
FeI3 is highly soluible in water. Because the bonding between Fe and I is highly ionic. In aqueous medium FeI3 ia disociates in Fe3+ and 3 I-. Both cation and anions are highly water soluble. Hence FeI3 is highly unstable in earth environment and finally prepared from non aqueous solvent.
Dissolved the substance in water and add sodium thiocyanate(NaSCN)
If it give blood red colour then Fe3+ is present in the solution.
Which indicates FeI3 was present initially not FeI2(Fe2+) and iodine.
