Question

which compound has the highest boiling point? C2H6, CS2, CH4, CO2?

which compound has the highest boiling point? C2H6, CS2, CH4, CO2?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The order of strengths of intermolecular forces is: ion-ion > H-bonding > dipole-dipole > London dispersion.

Componds with stronger intermolecular forces have higher boiling points.

But all the above compounds i.e. C2H6, CS2, CH4, CO2 has london dispersion force as intramolecular force.

Hence other characteristics should be use.

Therefor "the compound having higher molar mass has higher boinling point".

The order of molar mass is CS2>CO2>C2H6>CH4

Hence this is also the order of boiling point.

CS2  has highest boiling point .
