It is common on college campuses to relate demographic information about a group of students based on percentages. For example, a freshman class might be described as having 22% students from out of state, 18% international students, and the remainder in-state students.
a) What percentage of students in this freshman class are from in-state? Show how you determined this.
b) Related how this demographic information is an example of percent composition.
In a college total students count should be 100%
22% out of state + 18 % international + in-state = 100%
in state students = 100% - 18%-22% = 60%
b)
This different demographic students are similar to constituents of a chemical composition in percentage.
For example:
CO2 has 1 mole C atoms and 2 moles O atoms
mole % of C = 1/3 x 100 = 33.33 %
mole % of O = 2/3 x 100 = 66.66 %
total % = 33.33 + 66.66 = 100 %
