Draw the structure of cholesterol and 5a,6a-epoxychloestan-3b-ol in pen. Star the chiral centers. Indicate R/S for all stereogenic centers. How many steriosomers could there theoretically be for each compound?
Solution :-
Following image shows the structure of the both molecules labeled with chiral centers
in the cholestereol there are 8 chiral centers are present and in 5a,6a-epoxychloestan-3b-ol there are 10 chiral centers are present.
The formula to calculate the number of stereoisomers is as follows
number of stereoisomers = 2^n
n= number of chira centers
so for the cholesterol number of stereoisomers that are possible = 2^8 = 256
for the 5a,6a-epoxychloestan-3b-ol number of stereoisoemrs that are possible = 2^10 = 1024
